DONATIONS NEEDED! ASSOCIACAO ABANDONA DE CRIANCA ANGOLANA (AACA)

This is a girls’ orphanage situated in the City, by the Igreja Sagrada Familia.

They care for roughly 90 girls between the ages of 8 and 18.  Unlike some other orphanages at which some of our members may volunteer, AACA has very little and are in urgent need of help.

Although we cannot help them with cash as they are not one of our chosen charities this year, they have put out a plea for support including the following:

  • dried food supplies
  • clothes
  • art supplies
  • musical instruments
  • sports equipment
  • toys

The children are educated in the orphanage up to Year 6. The teachers are paid by the Ministry of Education.  After that, the children are sent to regular local schools.

Although being inaugurated by the wife of the President in the early 1990s with OMA (Organizacao da Mulher Angolana) back up, the Centre is now very much on its own.

The children do not have medical insurance, meaning that the Centre has to find money to pay for any treatment necessary.

The same applies to food and, although not starving, very often children go to sleep hungry – especially those who have to attend school outside of the Centre as there is not enough food for the ‘absents’.  Very often, the director has to ‘beg’ for food from strangers/friends/acquaintances in order to provide for the children.

In the past AACA had help from an art teacher, two music teachers, a sports teacher and a dance teacher.  Unfortunately, this has all ceased.

The girls continue to choreograph their own dance routines and, in exchange for some help, they can perform at functions (though not at night).

With the help of the Spanish Embassy, a small area for teaching and producing baked goods was built in 1997/1998 where older children received training in baking.   Unfortunately they now need support to keep this going, and are in urgent need of a full-sized oven.

The girls still bake (using a very small counter-top oven) and they sell these cakes to raise money for the orphanage’s utility bills.

Please bear AACA in mind.  Any donations will be gratefully received.  Bring them along to any LBW event (including coffee meetings) or drop them at the British Embassy c/o Jill Dennis.

Feliz Natal, LBW Angola

We are well into the Christmas season and I took note of challenges Angolano’s were facing in this last week: men riding double on scooters on flash-flooded roads, wearing supermarket plastic bags duct-taped onto their feet/legs; women sheltering from the searing heat (34 degrees) under the large Nativity characters on Agostinho Neto Square, and the increased prevalence of street begging.  I also reflected on my own challenges I faced this week: how to get the water laden chairs that had blown into the pool out before I could swim and hoping also that the taxi driver leaping around on the road in front of me would manage to keep his very low-slung jeans up(!) – it reminded me of the opportunity to cherish those we love, and be thankful for the opportunities we have. Whatever your focus for the Christmas season, may it be peaceful and rich. Merry Christmas from the LBW website admin.

Feliz Natal 2015 (640x427)

Angola Field Group continues..

Orphanage AFG

As many expats and local people in the Angola community are becoming aware, our patrons of the Angola Field Group Tako and Henriette Koning have left Angola after 15-20 years. This couple were incredibly active in Luanda and beyond and one of their passions was the Angola Field Group. If you are not aware of what and who this organisation is, check out their website. Great news is that although the Konings have gone, their legacy continues. Tomorrow evening Thursday November 19 at 7.30pm the AFG invites you to join with Sister Domingas Loureiro who will present “Casa da Criança Santa Isabel” – where orphans try and succeed in standing and moving ahead after losing their parents. Ninety children in the orphanage, ninety different stories. We will listen to three of them, Teresa, Juliana and Monica and discover how life can sometimes be cruel. We will learn that accusing children of witchcraft is still practiced in Angola despite being denounced a decade ago.

But above all, we will understand that no matter how tough life can be, taking up the challenge is the only way to grow and sometimes, change conditions. Our two testimonies, Mila and Lembra, will share their passion for music and will play some classic pieces. We promise to display a great lesson in humility, courage and hope and look forward to meeting with you and your friends.

Everybody is welcome to attend this event at the Viking Club. Check AFG website for more details.
